Honest Paws Study Explores Cost of Raising a Dog

Pet CBD company Honest Paws  shares the results of a study it recently conducted that found the first year of raising a puppy costs an average of $7,702 in the US. The study, titled “The Cost of Puppy vs. Baby in Every US State”  also includes a list of the top 15 least expensive and most expensive states for the first year of dog ownership.

Some Key Findings:

  • The top three most expensive states to adopt a canine companion are Connecticut, California and New York.
  • The cost of pet insurance in Minnesota is the second-highest in the US, at little under $600 per year.
  • This cost can be rolled into the adoption fee depending on the shelters where prospective adopters find their new best friend.
  • Kentucky is the cheapest state to adopt a puppy with residents paying just $6,733 on average for the first year.
  • Minnesota’s neighbors, North Dakota and South Dakota, also fit in the top ten least expensive states to adopt a puppy, coming in at $6,997 and $7,143 for the first year.
