Primal Pet Foods is Acquired by Pure Treats
Pure Treats Inc., the parent company of PureBites, has acquired Primal Pet Foods from private equity firm Kinderhook Industries, in a deal that includes adding Primal’s manufacturing facilities in Abilene, TX and Montrose, CO to the combined company’s operations.

The combined company will operate as the Pure Treats Primal Pet Group, with a manufacturing footprint that includes two facilities in Texas, a co-packing facility in Montreal, Canada, and a raw bones manufacturing facility in Colorado.
Founded in 2001 by Matt Koss, Primal was the driving force behind delivering to pet owners simple, pure ingredients that are minimally processed for peak nutrition to pets. A few years later, in 2005, Barry and Marc Cathcart founded PureBites with the intent to improve pets’ nutrition with clean labels and fewer ingredients. Primal was later purchased by Kinderhook Industries in 2020.
“The return of Primal to private ownership is very positive for the brand, consumers, customers and employees. The goals and authenticity of PureBites, their team, and their ownership offer Primal an opportunity to continue its mission started 25 year ago,” explained Koss.
This acquisition presents an opportunity for Primal to return to its original mission.
