Mars acquires VCA for $7.7 billion

Mars expanded their footprint within the pet industry as they acquired VCA. For $7.7 billion, the global candy and snacks provider purchased the animal-hospital chain on Monday, Jan. 9.

The acquisition added to Mars’ existing pet brands, which include Pedigree and Whiskas. The total value of the deal is about $9.1 billion, including $1.4 billion in outstanding debt.

VCA has become one of the largest animal care providers in the US as they operate in more than 19,000 independent hospitals. As such, Mars hopes to capitalize on the booming pet industry and continue expanding its presence in the pet and candy industries.
