Mondi opens new recyclability testing lab

Mondi has opened its first recycling lab to test the recyclability of their packaging, including paper-based products and non-paper materials, such as coatings. The lab is located at their existing mill in Frantschach, Austria and the company claims that in-house testing will speed up the process of developing more sustainable packaging.

“The ability to provide our customers with information on the recyclability of our products will be a key enabler in our efforts to develop more sustainable solutions and enhance our value proposition for customers,” said Elisabeth Schwaiger, head of R&D and IP Flexible Packaging at Mondi.

“Currently, 78 percent of Mondi’s group wide portfolio is already either reusable, recyclable or compostable. This recycling lab enables us to move closer to our MAP2030 goals of making 100 percent of our products fulfill these requirements by 2025,” Schwaiger continued.

The recyclability lab’s main goal will be to collect data that can help improve Mondi’s existing packaging products and providing information on different package’s environmental impact. The lab will also influence the design of new packaging, aiming to help improve the circularity of different types of materials.
