PremieRpet Invests R$1 Million to Bring First DEXA Scanner to Latin America

PremieRpet is supporting the inauguration of the new Multicare Center for Dogs and Cats at the University of São Paulo (USP) with a R$1 million investment. The brand’s contribution, which is equivalent to more than $176,000 USD, supported bringing the first pet-specific DEXA scanner to Latin America.

The investment was directed to HOVET, the veterinary hospital at the University of São Paulo (USP). Located within HOVET, the Multicare Center will lead cutting-edge research in pet obesity, a growing global concern among companion animals. The facility will also support studies in palliative care, pain management, physical rehabilitation, cachexia (the progressive loss of muscle, fat and bone mass) and chronic diseases (both congenital and acquired), as well as oncology and gastroenterology.

The Multicare Center was the long-held vision of Professor Marcio Antonio Brunetto, a globally recognized expert in dog and cat nutrition who passed away in April 2023. He aspired to establish the region’s first dedicated weight loss center for pets and identified the DEXA scanner as a critical piece of equipment. Originally developed for use in human medicine, this advanced imaging device measures bone and fat density and helps assess muscle mass loss, offering precise insights into body composition.

Recognizing the significance of the project and reinforcing its commitment to veterinary education, PremieRpet’s donation brought Professor Brunetto’s mission to life by funding the acquisition and adaptation of the DEXA scanner. This advanced technology enables safe, fast and painless assessments of body composition with minimal radiation exposure. A recent study by USP’s veterinary school found that 40 percent of dogs in São Paulo are overweight, underscoring the urgent need for specialized care and ongoing research.

“This is a historic moment for veterinary science in Brazil and across Latin America, and  we’re proud to be part of it,” said Fernando Maluf, VP of International Sales. “By investing in cutting-edge technologies like the DEXA scanner, we’re not only improving animal health and welfare but also reaffirming our commitment to innovation and education, helping pets lead healthier and happier lives.”
