The National Police Association Endorses the LEO K9 Protection Act

The LEO K9 Protection Act (H.R. 4755) is a new bill that strengthens protections by increasing penalties for harming or killing a federal law enforcement dog or horse and ensuring that an injured animal receives prompt emergency care.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Aaron Bean (FL-4) and endorsed by the National Police Association (NPA), is now before both the Justice Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for deliberation. The text for the bill, once it becomes available, will be here.

In addition to increasing the maximum term of imprisonment, Rep. Bean’s bill includes a provision permitting first responders to administer emergency medical care to a police K9 or horse. It also requires the US Department of Transportation to issue rules allowing an injured police animal to be transported by ambulance or helicopter. Provisions in this bill would be extended to state and local police animals assisting a federal agency.

“Police dogs and horses are dedicated public servants who work tirelessly alongside law enforcement officers and as such are increasingly under fire. These brave animals are much more than indispensable public servants. They are also beloved partners and cherished family members deserving of care and protection,” said Paula Fitzsimmons, Legislative Director for the National Police Association. “Provisions in the LEO K9 Protection Act are designed to ensure police animals receive stronger legal protections and critical emergency care. This bill will save lives,” Fitzsimmons added.

The NPA shared in a statement: “The NPA extends its gratitude to Rep. Bean for introducing the LEO K9 Protection Act, a bill that increases the penalty for harming or killing a federal police dog or horse; ensures these animals receive access to prompt critical care when injured; and expands these protections to local and state animals assisting with federal cases. This bill is a tribute to the valiant dogs and horses of law enforcement and to the men and women who serve with them. We ask Congress to support this important bill.”
