Retailer Spotlight: Pet Supermarket
Pet Supermarket is a specialty retailer with more than 200 stores across the US as well as an online shop offering premium pet food, supplies, and services for a variety of pets. Many of the stores offer a range of services, such as self-serve dog washes, grooming, adoptions, and VIP pet care clinics.
The company’s store footprint is primarily in Florida, with locations throughout Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, and North Carolina. Estimates of the company’s annual revenue vary, with various online media sources reporting revenue between $572.7 to $885.8 million dollars.
Pet Supermarket’s neighborhood focus helps it stand out against giant competitors. Stores are designed to be smaller in layout, roughly 7,000 square feet, so they feel more personal. They even carry heavy pet food out to customers’ cars—rain or shine.
With more than 8,000 pet care products and services on its website and in its stores, the company focuses on premium foods as well as locally made items that larger retailers don’t carry. The company offers same-day delivery and curbside pickup to compete with online retailers like Chewy and Amazon.
The retailer is also known for its loyalty program with more than 1.8 million members. “With VIP Rewards members driving more than 85 percent of our sales, their experience is central to everything we do,” said Laurie Efman, previously the Director of Customer Relationship Management.
History
Pet Supermarket was founded in 1973 with a simple objective: to be a one-stop shop where pet parents could find everything they need under one roof. The company was originally called Pet Circus and was renamed Pet Supermarket in 1986. In 2015, they were acquired by Roark Capital Group for an estimated $250 million to $480 million. The acquisition allowed Roark Capital Group to merge Pet Supermarket with Pet Valu (acquired in 2009) to form Pet Retail Brands.
In 2021, the company’s regional focus in the Southeast, combined with its extensive high-quality pet products, earned recognition as one of the top pet retailers in North America. In June 2023, Pet Supermarket partnered with Spot Pet Insurance to offer customers easier access to pet insurance.
Digital Experience
Pet Supermarket’s keen focus on digital partnerships, such as its 2022 partnership with Salesforce, has opened up new capabilities for the company. They’ve adopted a BOPIS (Buy Online, Pick Up In-Store) strategy where customers can buy products online and pick them up in-store, typically within an hour.
“Turning stores into fulfillment hubs improved the experience for customers and drove more traffic to our locations,” confirmed Chadwick Hamby, Vice President, IT at Pet Supermarket.
The company partnered with Reflex AI Solutions in January 2023 to optimize its supply chain operations, improve demand forecasting, and enhance replenishment for its distribution centers and stores.
Leadership
Pet Supermarket has undergone recent leadership turnover. Rich Tannenbaum, who was appointed CEO in late 2023, has since departed the company and taken a senior role at Worldpac. As of 2026, Brendan Proctor has taken over the role of CEO. Before Pet Supermarket, he was President and CEO of Red Apple. Proctor brings extensive retail leadership to the organization.
Leadership includes Todd Northcutt, SVP of Retail Store Operations, who oversees store performance and Chadwick Hamby, VP of Information Technology, who focuses on e-commerce expansion and digital assets, with previous experience at PetSmart.
Community Outreach
Pet Supermarket isn’t just a store. It’s a community of pet lovers. Through their Lend a Paw Program, they partner with local animal shelters and rescue organizations and have raised nearly $5 million.
They work with the United States War Dogs Association, which supports retired military working dogs with health care. They also support Dogs Inc, which provides highly skilled dogs to those in need—all at no cost.
In the News
The New York Post recently reported that roughly one-third, or 37 percent, of all pet owners are currently carrying debt specifically related to their animals. To combat this trend of rising pet care costs, in February 2026, Pet Supermarket hosted a Friends & Family event designed to help pet owners navigate the current economic pressures.
“Pets are family, and we know many households are feeling real pressure when it comes to the cost of pet care,” said Todd Northcutt, Senior Vice President at Pet Supermarket. “Friends & Family is our way of helping pet parents stretch their pet care budgets while still feeling confident in the choices they’re making for their pets—whether that’s food, supplies, or support from our teams in-store.”
In the past year, Pet Supermarket has partnered with several premium pet food and care brands to expand its in-store offerings, including Open Farm, Petbeing, and Uproot Clean.
For companies like Open Farm, a premium pet food brand, the partnership helps it provide pet parents with greater access to its sustainably sourced nutrition.
“Pet Supermarket’s neighborhood-focused approach makes them an ideal partner to help us connect with local pet parents seeking high-quality, nutritious options for their pets,” said Chief Sales Officer Amy Horton.
Neighborhood feel combined with curated, premium offerings—Pet Supermarket resonates with today’s pet parents. As costs rise and competition intensifies, the company’s focus on community, loyalty and unique products will help it sustain the connection with consumers and their pets in the years ahead.
